15 December 1941: The US battle group comprising of the USS Lexington, the heavy cruisers USS Chicago, USS Portland and USS Astoria and 3 destroyers is intercepted at extreme aircraft range by the Kido Butai returning from the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The combined aerial attack overwhelms the Lexington's defenses and the entire battle group is heavily damaged, with 8 bomb hits reported on the Lexington.
25 December 1941: Confirmed to have sunk.
